If the social contract is not a fiction and did exist, the terms and conditions binding the rulers and the ruled have certainly changed over time. The state of insecurity due to multiple factors, the fragility of state institutions, recurrent social unrests, and inequalities evidence this. From the MDGs to the SDGs, leaders globally are still struggling to find the right formula to address citizens’ aspirations to sound security and development. Such reality prompts for the need to rethink State-Nation relationships to lay new foundations for a fairer, more transparent, and accountable social contract. This session brings together a group of experts (academics and practitioners) to engage with participants and share their thoughts on the notions of social contract, social inequality, the concept of state fragility, good governance, community engagement and participation. Moderated in the format of a round table to reflect perspectives from different regions the session will be an opportunity for participants to share their own views and discuss why our ways of doing business in society must change.
