KPAC24 Session: Feminist Foreign Policy: What Role for Civil Society Actors?

Updated: Nov 19

November 20, 2024 | 13:00-14:30

Session Language: French (English translation TBD)

Session Description:

Recent global crises have highlighted the importance of feminist foreign policies to promote gender equality and reduce social and economic inequalities. Indeed, girls and women remain the first victims of the upheavals that have occurred worldwide over the last five years: the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, which have set back the achievement of equality by a generation, armed conflicts and climate change are all factors that reinforce already glaring inequalities. While women’s rights are a barometer of the state that societies are in, Feminist Foreign Policy is by no means directed only at women. It is grounded in the conviction that all people enjoy the same rights and deserve the same freedoms and opportunities.  It aims to address a fundamental fairness issue and rests on the understanding that societies are more peaceful and prosperous if all people are able to participate in political, social and economic life.

While Feminist Foreign Policy (FFP) aim to place gender equality, intersectional justice, and human rights at the core of international relations and diplomacy, there has been over the last couple of years, a growing interest in understanding the role of civil society actors in advancing, shaping, and holding governments accountable for such policies.

This KPAC24 session seeks to explore the essential role of civil society—NGOs, grassroots movements, advocacy groups, and feminist networks—in promoting and implementing Feminist Foreign Policy. It will also address the challenges civil society actors face and identify strategies to amplify their influence in international policy spaces.

The session aims to serve as a starting point for more inclusive and impactful partnerships between civil society actors and policymakers, promoting a more just and equitable global policy agenda through the lens of Feminist Foreign Policy.
